Lesson 9 – ‘S’ Curves

Another dynamic tool composition is to include "S" curve. As the name suggests, an important element of the composition would be an object, like a stream, road, rail, or other object, which creates an "S" curve

If S is right in front and begins in the lower left corner and leaves the upper right corner - the feelings of people who speak more English is that the image moves away from the viewer.

If the "S" turns and starts at the top left to bottom right, the picture seems to be coming toward the viewer. This effect is, I think, to learn to read from left to right.

Exercise: go find the S-curve for photography. Meet curves right and left face and see how they feel to you.
